The Role of Nuts in the Development of the Jomon
As forests spread with the improving Holocene climate, nut-bearing trees proliferated all across what's now China and Japan. The Jomon were among the first groups living in East Asia to intensively exploit tree nuts. If you could harvest and store them, you wouldn't have to move around nearly as much. You could enable a more sedentary lifestyle. Griding stones show up at excavated settlements in China,. like Dong Huli in the northern part of the country.
