wire had its uses, but it never caught on as a medium for music because of another format that worked even better. With magnetic tape, the improvements in the length of recording were extraordinary and the fidelity of the recording was indistinguishable over the airwaves from someone speaking live. However, this kind of tape was expensive, so it was mostly used in professional recording studios. But soon enough, other recording devices would find their way into people's homes and offices.
