In 1618, the Elector of the Palatine decided to accept the offer of the Bohemian nobles to take over the crown there from the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II. The Protestant forces are totally routed and Frederick is flung into exile. But by winning so totally, it gave the emperor Ferdinand II the idea he could roll back a lot of the Protestant gains that had happened in the last century. That aroused the hostility of not only German Protestant princes, but the other Protestant countries,. And most importantly Catholic France, which saw the Spanish Habsburgs as their chief geopolitical enemy.
