The Importance of the Institution of Mental Health

I think for Illich, it was never merely about becoming a rugged individual. It was always a kind of personal autonomy and capability for the sake of mutual interdependence. And I don't think we've been foolish enough to say that we can do all things for ourselves. There are thresholds where the institutions become counterproductive because they now begin to make us more dependent rather than empowering us.
