Advanced Education in Science Fiction and Fantasy

In science fiction we might write something like, at age 6 students are legally required to enroll at a public care done school named for the famous scientist Kier. After this each student must enroll in a technical school for two years learning space sciences. Advanced education beyond this is available in three years stints, each resulting in a degree. In a setting where a school ends early like that fantasy example where I had it ending around age 12, if someone does get advanced education it might not be in something like a public university but more from something like an apprenticeship.
