CHAPTER

The Power of Hope in the Face of the Environmental Crisis

In Japan, when valuable pottery broke, the shards would be saved and eventually sent to a Kin-Sugi master who would rebuild the pottery from those shards. This metaphor strikes close to the heart of Christian scripture: Jesus himself was broken and was restored; he came back not as a perfect replica of his pre-crucified self but he came back with wounds. We have to remember the kind of brokenness that our sin has led to, even as we attempt to mend it so that it's functional and even beautiful again.
