The Importance of Relativity in Physics
Some of the most accurate predictions in physics have been made from theory that combines relativity and quantum mechanics. I've got one classic example of that which came from left field was of course the great work of Stephen Hawking, where he took Einstein's theory of gravity to predict black holes. He showed that if you bring those two things together you get amazing insights into nature. So contrary the impression you might get from some quarters, the physicists are sort of making up these weird, wonderful things and they're really disconnected from nature.
