What Is the Race for Attention?

Is it social media more than anything else? Or is everything that's grabbing attention engaged in the same arms race and kind of equal concern? Well, as a systems person, it's really the system. It's the attention economy, it's the race for attention itself that concerns me. People are in the tech industry appear to me very often as being blind to what that race costs us.
