There is a constant standing miracle of Jewish surviving. Something has to be done to earn it. And if the scales of merit fall too low, then cracks appear in the dam. Cracks appearing in the dam means that the forces of nature, which are already poised, already primed to destroy us, are simply given their way. It doesn't require God to initiate a blow. It just means that God relaxes his control of those who are already the terrorist of pieces. Europe certainly counts as a communal failure. That's where the cause must be sought.
