The argument that studying literature trains even critical thinking, to me, smacks of this sort of ex post facto rationalization. I would call it opening your mind to things that I think are beneficial for functioning in the democratic society. To what extent does that knowledge translate into being better at thinking about other things? It's one of those things that is very difficult to measure.
