In 1980, a North Dakota farmer saw six Jerusalem artichoke plants growing in the alley behind his rapid city home. Hendrickson attributed this conversion to his discovery of how they were doing wonderfully. He declared them "energy farming's answer to OPEC" and began encouraging farmers to experiment with it. In 1981 he moved east to Sioux Falls, South Dakota,. They're on the edge of corn rich, but crisis stricken southwestern Minnesota and northwestern Iowa.
