Understanding Consciousness and Intelligence
For a conscious organism, there is something it is like to be that organism. This definition of consciousness doesn't imply any sophistication to the kind of experiences that a system has. You don't have to be particularly intelligent to experience pain or suffering or pleasure. In humans, the two are quite linked. We feel what's special about us is that we are both intelligent or we think we are, and we're conscious. But in principle, they can be quite different.
