The Vanderbilts and the Asters
The Vanderbilts were an interesting side story to the Asters. They are an old Dutch family, but they had for generations just been poor farmers on Staten Island. North of 42nd Street is where we find what came to be known as Vanderbilts Row. Billy and six of his adult kids built seven immense, mostly French chatto style mansions between 51st and 58th Street.
