At Talis, we didn't actually make a financial distinction between senior engineer and tech lead. They were just different jobs but they were more peers. The people that went into leadership positions weren't necessarily the best at doing the things that they were going to manage. And I think that's something that's really overlooked in all kinds of engineering jobs.
