As early as the 1940s, sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov had begun to push back against the standard narrative. In practice, in Asimov's fiction, the three laws of robotics didn't quite work. At the height of the Cold War, the scenario that stoked fear was not super-intelligent machines, but thermonuclear missiles under all two human control. Some thinkers even speculated that the world might be safer, with AI in charge.
