The Cost of Gain of Function Research

Most of the people we didn't publish it, who signed it, so that they would be protected. Did other signatories get punished or did they bother tweeting or didn't make a spectacle of themselves? I don't know, it doesn't seem obvious to me that gain of function research is a bad thing. Can't that be useful to develop vaccines for a possible new virus? "I mean, it's gotten such a bad name now because of the miasma of lies thanks to our public health authorities"
