Henry VIII's Marriage Before Witnesses
Clement VII had warned Henry not to remarry and threatened him with excommunication. In 16th century terms, that was worse than a death sentence according to the Pope. By 1533, although the act of supremacy only happens a year later, Henry officially becomes supreme head of the church. But this whole business of wanting to marry Anne and wanting to be separated from Catherine has made him completely reevaluate where his spiritual authority lies.
