The first job he had was as a still photographer at Art College. He thought about documentary filmmaking, but didn't get accepted to the National Film School in England. In an interim year they offered him a job photographing rural life of North Devon. "I don't think I was very good at it because if something didn't catch my eye ... then I wouldn't take a picture"
