Are We Going to Go to Mars in 12 Months?

CNN's John Sutter recalls an exchange during hearings on the cost of a particle collider. A physicist said, by my calculations, you just ate a few billion quarks this morning for breakfast. The time delay between a serendipitous scientific discovery and when that becomes a useful product is longer typically than the re-election cycles of those who are allocating money. If we're going to go to Mars, it will likely only happen if we can find an economic driver for it or a military driver.
