Should the Department of Defense Get Out of the R and D Business?
Mike Downey: An op-ed article suggested that government should stop funding basic research. He says the money would be better spent on procurement, which incentivizes investors to do more work in the space. The labs also do a lot of work that nobody in industry can afford to do or would do, he says. Downey: I think if we defunded the labs, we'd be in deep trouble in 10, 20, 30 years.
