The Word Tantamount
Robert Askins, 58, was arrested in 1977 for the kidnapping and rape of a 24-year-old woman. He had previously spent several years in St Elizabeth Hospital after pleading not guilty by reason of insanity to murdering a sex worker back in 1938. The same word featured in the note from the Freeway Phantom found in Brenda Woodard's coat pocket: tantamount. A search of his home uncovered photos of young girls, soiled women's scarves, and a knife that was linked to another unsolved crime. No fibers were found that matched those on the bodies of several Freeway Phantom victims.
