The choice in front of Harry Truman and America more generally was, do we drop the bomb and end the lives of uncountable innocence? Or do we keep the bomb as a possibility, but try to end the war with fewer casualties? Is that even possible? And something that is often forgotten in this debate, there were other options on the table too.
