Transgender Youth and Mental Health

Two psychology professionals wrote that the mental health establishment is failing trans kids. The authors are questioning practitioners who go straight to treating gendedisphoria medically, skipping over mental health care and then just administering hormones to children as young as 12. Current agreed standards of care from the world professional association for trans gender health say counselling is an important first step. Counselling does often help, but it can't claim to be a resolution. Are there any treatments of gendedisporia that are as effective in relieving the distress experienced as medical interventions?
