Listen to NPR's embedded podcast in its latest series, Taking Cover. Octavia Butler was one of the first African American women to successfully write science fiction. She spent her early years living on a dusty chicken ranch which had no running water. Her family couldn't afford to buy her any books so she read cast-offs from families that her grandmother worked for.
