Alexius angelus promised the crusaders ships, money, guides and all kinds of very substantial assistance in return for helping him to overthrow the byzantine emperor. A popular uprising began in january 12 o four when constantinople refused to pay these debts that they had been promised. The crusading force sacks constantinople, looting the city of its money and its art a, stealing all sorts of holy christian relics. They install one of their own leaders as emperor, and they create the so called latin empire - but it never recovers from this disaster.
