The End of India

After the Second World War, it becomes clear that the British are going to leave India. One of the big unresolved questions was whether Hindus, Muslims and other religions could actually live together peacefully in this new, independent India. Right until 1946, these models were being debated and discussed by Jinnah, by Gandhi, by Nehru, by the British. It is today that all this past holds round me and exhilarates me, and at the same time, somewhat oppresses me. Our stillities will end officially at one minute after midnight tonight.
