Transgender and the Stonewall
The term transgender wasn't actually coined until the early 90s. A lot of trans women at the time would have called themselves queens or trans vestites. They considered Stonewall and Washington Square the most congenial downtown bars. If they pass muster, they could buy or cajole drinks,. exchange cosmetics and perfumes, admire or deplore somebody's latest wig., make fun of six foot transsexual lins, size 12 women's shoes; dance in a feverish sweat till closing time at 4 AM.
