i think these two stories of angleton and matrokin reveal an irony about intelligence, and for that matter, sort of i disinformation war. It's more pewerleus to defect or blow the whistle in a totalitarian state like the soviet union than it is in a place like america. And despite the best efforts of the soviets and now the russians to trick us into epistemological despair, the first victims of that war on truth are the host societies.
