In the 17th and early 18th centuries, Americans were probably the most literate society on the entire planet. The effort to create a national story for ourselves was completely dominated by Harvard and Yale intellectuals. It is a mistake to think that the evangelical, intolerant sort of world of the deep south and greater Appalachia is Puritan in any way.
