A graph that inspired me was a very simple graph, actually. It's a graph of, along the bottom, it's how old you are. Up the side is your chance of death in that particular year of your life. All of us know that older people are more likely to die, but just how much really shocked me. If I'm lucky enough to live into my 90s, but unlucky enough that we haven't worked out any new medical technology in the intervening time, my risk of death every year will be about 1 in 6. That's life and death at the role of a dice.
