The Origins of Greek Temples
The Temple of Harrow 1 at Poseidonia, or Pashdon, in southern Italy is one of the earliest surviving temples still standing. It's called Harrow 1 to differentiate it from the later Harrow 2, built during the Classical period. Another standing surviving temple is the smaller one to Athena, dating to around 500 BC. Their thick mass of columns appear to respond to the weight of the capital by widening and bowing out in the center.
