"I like the idea that you act as if everything that's happened in your life was fated to happen and that, therefore, you should not dwell on the way things could have turned out," he says. "I've become this person that's a contrarian on race issues. I'm a black guy that thinks the wrong things about race." He adds: "It's been there's points at which it's been rough, at which I've wondered, maybe I just should have done something more conventional with my life"
