When you land on your heel, as a heel striker, you shift the load from the calf to the knee. The steeper the slope of that first impact peak, the greater the rate of loading. And studies have shown that rates of loading are related to running-related injuries. You can take a longer stride if you could strike with your heel rather than your toe.
