At this point, the vast majority of the German cavalry divisions were just infantry. The Russians only had a few reconnaissance planes and couldn't find anybody with them. They launched entire attacks on what they thought was a German position, only to fight in empty woods or swamps. When the northwest front commander, Jelinski, demanded that Samsonov keep searching for Germans, Samsonov had to explain that his army was too tired despite not having fought a single battle.
