Tokugawa Hidatata's Purple Riding

Tokugawa Hidatata and his successors brought the Buddhist establishment to heel. The Emperor would no longer be allowed to leave the grounds of the Gosho, or inner palace compound. For over 200 years, barring the occasional fire or earthquake that forced the Emperor to take refuge in a nearby Templar shrine,. This was a triumph for the Tokugawa regime. It confirmed their right to give orders to religious leaders and even determine who those leaders should be.
