In outer space you can't use fossil fuels, unless you make them with some other energy source. There's no wind power. No hydropower. Maybe they'll be hydro power on Mars after the Terraform it but not until then. That basically leaves you with either solar energy or nuclear energy now solar energy is okay if you're at Earth's distance from the Sun. In deep spaces, it's negligible. Whereas nuclear power is available all the time anywhere. And so without nuclear power there is no space fairing future.
