The Battle of Marathon
The plane of Marathon was situated next to a large crescent-shaped bay facing eastwards. This extended all the way around into a long peninsula that juts out into the sea, referred to as the Dog's Tale. Although the Persians dictated the battlefield, the Athenians chose the terrain. The Greeks had the far superior position and tried to contain the beachhead for as long as possible.
