What Is the State of the Hypothalamus?
Sterling Lachlan: How are structures like the hypothalamus actually, what is the state of an organism? He says basic aspects of behavior include sensing the nutrient content of your environment. When you deplete these nutrients from the environment by ingesting them, you have to detect that those nutrients are no longer there., he says. And very naturally, when you just sort of think about these very basic things, the metabolic state of the animal coupled to the environment via its sensory apparatuses naturally leads you to talk about things being good or bad and motivated or unmotivated.
