The Future of Child Pedestrian Safety
Child pedestrian mortality for children has increased about 11% over the last decade. Automation, backup cameras and automatic emergency braking clearly has a role there to make children safer in those environments. I worry more about the impact of automation in street driving because as cars become progressively more autonomous, they have to rely on algorithms that detect pedestrians and predict pedestrian behavior. So while adult pedestrians are easier to detect and more predictable in the way they negotiate street environments, children are not. They are unfortunately not predictable in the context of traffic.
