The entire reason they are surrounded by radiation is because getting into a black hole is not impossible. The particles of gas and dust fall toward it and generally miss, unless they are almost perfectly on target,. Some spin around that star and have gained huge kinetic energy from the far and ram into each other. This causes a slow formation of an accretion disk and bits of matter occasionally falling in. And even a 10 solar mass black hole only has an escape velocity of 7% of light speed at a distance equal to our entire planet Earth.
