The Role of Speech in Vocabulary Growth

Researchers found that caregivers use more infant directed communications with infants who know fewer word. The idea is when the child knows fewer words, the caregiver can depend on other forms of communication to get their point across. When children are older and they do know more words, then caregivers might be able to rely on speech more in order to convey subtleties about what they wish to communicate.
