There's a broader concept called pluralistic ignorance. You think you have an image of what the norm is for your group, but it's wrong. Young people always turn over jobs quicker then older people are. If bosses think that there's something wrong with their younger team members, and that these people are more likely to leave quickly, or otherwise not engage deeply in the work, well it can decrease engagement between leaders and younger employees.
