Are the Princes of the Unitice Culture Really Kings?
Evidence of writing, palaces and settlement hierarchies strongly speaks to some kind of sophisticated political organization that qualifies as a state. But when we take our sets of state criteria, economic specialization, social hierarchies, signs of territorial dominance, all things start to get tricky. Some scholars have argued that there must have been elits in the bronze age europe culture but they don't exist. There are no lavish burials for exalted leadership so it's not clear if states even existed.
