Cosmic Strings: A Crisis in Confidence

KULPA: Robert, I've known you for 30 years. Why do they still fixate you so delightfully so? Right. So there's nice physics, but there's also good motivation. And that motivation comes from particle physics. Now cosmic strings produce signatures in microwave sky. They produce lines in the sky across workship temperature jumps and they produce rectangles in the sky where there is extra polarization with a uniform direction - including B-mode polarization. If you could find a signal of a cosmic string in the sky, you would have shown that the way beyond the standard model of particle physics is in this one class of a four.
