The Role of Speculators in the Market

The role of speculators is to help with both that risk transfer and the smoothing out of the volatility rather than exacerbating it. Most fundamentally, they're the source of the liquidity that allows those that want to offload price risk to do so at a reasonable cost. To me, that's their fundamental role. But to do that, they're obviously taking on some enormous price risk.
