The Rise of Individualism in America
In 1965, all the guys in American high school yearbooks had crew cuts. In 1968, half have long hair; by 75, they all have long hair. That's a symptomatic of a shift in culture that was self-effacing: I know better than anybody else but nobody's better than me. The median narcissism score went up by like 40% in a few years. So we became much more individualist. We're beginning to encounter a world that looks very different.
