Is Voice a Sexually Selected Trait?
When I started studying this stuff in grad school, the literature pretty much talked about how male traits were not sexual ornaments for attracting females. And so anyway, I just thought about voice and I thought, yeah, that's got to be sexually selected. And once I started doing research on it, I discovered that sure women prefer deep voices a little bit lower than average but the effect of the same pitch manipulation was 15 times as big when manipulated by men. It always has a bigger positive effect on perceptions of dominance than attraction to women.
