The Knights of the Golden Circle were a secret society that wanted to take control of vast swathes of North America. The idea was based on Manifest Destiny, which meant 'America had an obvious destiny' Slavery was a key issue in the tension between the North and the South during the Civil War. In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected President without a single electoral vote from the Southerners.
