The City of New York Purchased a Part of Hard Island

The hart island barracks were refitted into a prison for confederate soldiers. 235 men died here, just during these very few months. They were eventually interred in cypress hill's cemetery in brooklyn. In 18 68, the city of new york purchased a portion of the island from its owner at this time and planned to use it for a municipal purpose.
