The First Plain Load of Mariel Refugees at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas

Joanne Norton was a reporter with the Southwest Times record, The Daily Newspaper in nearby Fort Smith. This was a big old army training base that had been built during World War II. Over the next few weeks, 19,000 Mariel refugees arrived at Fort Chaffee from South Florida. By the time the refugees got to Arkansas, those stories about them had already taken root.
